Happy 250th Birthday to the U.S. Army and Marine Corps
by Leslie Parsons
This year marks a milestone in American history: the 250th birthdays of both the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps. The Army was officially formed on June 14, 1775, and the Marine Corps followed closely behind on November 10, 1775. For two and a half centuries, these branches have defended our nation’s freedom, safeguarded democracy, and stood ready to answer the call—no matter the cost.
At the True North Foundation, we are proud to honor this incredible legacy. Our mission is to support veterans as they transition to civilian life, and we do this by raising awareness, providing financial support, and volunteering alongside nonprofits that serve the veteran community. As we celebrate this historic anniversary, we invite you to join us in giving back to those who have given so much.
1. Volunteer Your Time
Nothing says “thank you” quite like showing up. Many veteran-serving nonprofits rely on volunteers to make their programs possible. Whether it’s assisting at a fundraiser, helping with event logistics, or offering professional expertise, your time can have a real impact. True North regularly works with organizations such as Stay in Step, which provides life-changing spinal cord injury recovery programs, and Dog Tag, which empowers veterans and military spouses through its entrepreneurial fellowship program.
2. Attend an Event
This year is full of opportunities to connect with the veteran community while celebrating the Army’s and Marine Corps’ shared 250-year history. Mark your calendar for:
Stay in Step Gala – September 6
Dog Tag Fellowship Program Networking Event – September 23
True North will be hosting its own fundraising event--Whiskey for Warriors—in New York City on November 6.
These gatherings not only raise critical funds for veterans but also create meaningful spaces for community connection and gratitude.
3. Make a Donation
Supporting veteran-focused nonprofits financially is one of the most direct ways to make an impact. Every dollar helps provide services like job training, adaptive sports, education, and health care resources. Your gift—no matter the size—can change a veteran’s life.
4. Share a Simple ‘Thank You’
Sometimes the most meaningful gesture is the simplest. Take a moment to thank a veteran or active-duty service member for their service. Whether it’s a handshake at a local parade, a note dropped off at a VA hospital, or a post shared on social media, your words matter.
As we celebrate 250 years of courage, sacrifice, and resilience, let’s honor the legacy of the Army and Marine Corps by serving those who served us. Together, we can ensure that the next chapter of their story is one of opportunity, community, and hope.
